Passing of Knowledge

Passing of Knowledge Mural

Artist: Susan Respinger

This bold piece was inspired by history informing our future. As St Andrew’s Grammar is a Greek school with a large Greek community surrounding it, this mural reflects the ancient Greek philosophers who paved the way for so many of the scientific discoveries of today.

The background is a depiction of our universe which was heavily studied by many famous Greek philosophers and symbolises all the mysteries we have yet to discover as a species. On the left-hand side is a portrait of Pythagoras surrounded by his mathematical equations, marvelling at the incredible Antikythera mechanism which is essentially a 2000-year-old analogy computer invented by the Greeks and used for sailing navigation. On the right-hand side is a young, modern scientist studying biology using computer generated plant models developed using coding.

The depictions of plants within the modern scientist’s world symbolise hope and growth for the future. While the two characters seem worlds apart they’re connected by human nature’s curious mind and the knowledge that human progress is a never-ending journey built upon by every new generation.
